Sara James (center on both pictures) and her two school friends Rebecca Smith and Zeenat Pelaria entered The Lost Generation Competition early in 2006, on behalf of their school: Chadwell Heath Foundation. Even though over 1000 pupils entered the competiton from all over England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, Sara and her friend's entry won. Their school got a prize of a history DVD worth £700 and their class was given a VIP trip to the Imperial War Museum. For their entry they studied the war memorial tablets either side of the alter at the east end of St. John's church. They compared the names with a photograph of the church football team from a few year before the war and found that several of the names matched. They were able to find out more about some of these people that had died. You can see their entry for yourselves by downloading this Power Point presentation: The Entry (6Mb). Read the text of an article from St. John's Pilgrimage Magazine about the competition from July 2006. |
