The foundation stone for St. John's was laid in 1902. A Consecration Service was held two years later. Over the next ten years additions were made to the building including a pipe organ, choir stalls, a roodscreen and porches. In 1933, the Lady Chapel was redecorated. Seven years later a Children's Corner was furnished. By 1954 the main building work was completed with a Memorial Chapel.
Through the 1960's and into the 1980's various plans were put forward to decide the future of this building which was incurring heavy financial burdens. In June 1989 a major development programme began. Many fittings including the organ, roodscreen and pulpit were removed, along with the solid elevated floor of the Chancel and Sanctuary. The Vicarage, next to the building was sold, where now stands sheltered housing accommodation.
Today the interior of the building is completely transformed. It now has a large worship area for over 200 people. When required this seating area can be extended through the lounge and into the hall at the rear. There are three halls and an upstairs meeting room. These are available for hire. From the outside, the church appears to be an old "Victorian type" building, but the inside has a modern appearance with many new facilities. Some of the features of the original old building have been incorporated into the new.
The main entrance is approached from St. John's Road. A ramp allows access for wheelchair users and there are toilet facilities for the disabled. An induction loop system exists in the Worship Area for people with hearing aids.
